Couples Therapy:
Integrative behavioral couples therapy (IBCT)

IBCT helps couples identify and understand the problematic patterns that fuel cycles of conflict and emotional disconnect. Rather than only focusing on the surface-level content of arguments, IBCT looks at the deeper context—how each partner’s history, personality, and emotional needs shape the way they act and respond to their partner. IBCT also emphasizes acceptance as a way for partners to better understand each other’s differences instead of trying to "fix" one another or create compromises—it means creating a foundation where change can happen more naturally and sustainably.

One unique strength of IBCT is its shift away from blame and towards collaborative problem-solving. Instead of assigning fault when issues arise, partners are encouraged to view their struggles as part of a shared pattern that both contribute to and can repair. The goal isn't to determine who’s right or wrong, but to understand what’s happening between you and your partner and why, so you can respond with more compassion and flexibility. In this way, IBCT strengthens your ability to face challenges together.

Who is it good for?

IBCT also offers specific advantages over other couples therapies, like the Gottman Method, which sometimes encourages conflict in its process. It is also better at predicting longterm relationship success when compared to emotionally focused therapy—especially when one or both partners:

  • Have a history of trauma or attachment wounds

  • Are in recovery from addiction or exploring sobriety

  • Are neurodiverse (e.g., ADHD, autism)

  • Tend to become highly reactive or shut down during conflict

  • Are veterans or first responders
